After completing service, or after being wounded, Cossacks, whether Serdiuks or Haiduks, could enter the status of an obshytovanyi, or retired, Cossack. This status removed the obligation to march on campaign except by personal choice. The empire also paid a pension for each retired Cossack and granted land on different planets.
Retired Cossacks also received a discount when sending their children to train with the Plastuns.
